Flute Fest

UMFA will host its next flute Fest in Saint Paul, MN on April 27, 2024 with guest artist Dr. Rachel Haug. To view COVID policies for this event, visit our COVID page.

UMFA is excited to welcome Dr. Rachel Haug as the featured guest artist for Flute Fest 2024!

Rachel Haug is a freelance flutist, orchestral musician, and private instructor in the Minneapolis area. In addition to her responsibilities as Director of Flute Sales and Specialist at Schmitt Music, she is the Flute Instructor at Winona State University, where she teaches applied flute lessons, flute choir, and woodwind techniques. Additionally, she maintains an active private flute studio in the Twin Cities, and her students are frequently accepted to All-State Band and Orchestra, summer festivals, and other honors ensembles. Dr. Haug also serves as Principal Flute with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Principal Flute with the Winona Symphony Orchestra, and is the first-call substitute flute with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to orchestral performing, Dr. Haug enjoys an active solo career. She has performed as a featured soloist at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (2023), the Minnesota Music Educators Convention (2023), with the Plymouth Concert Band (2022), at the National Band Association—Wisconsin Chapter Convention (2020), and with the Winona Symphony Orchestra (2018), among others. In 2022, she also performed Julia Wolfe's Oxygen as a member of a 144-piece flute choir at the National Flute Association Convention.

Dr. Haug earned her DMA and MM in flute performance from The Ohio State University, where she studied with Katherine Borst Jones, and BA from Luther College under the instruction of Dr. Carol Hester. Her research, An Introduction to Twentieth-Century Flute Music by Norwegian Composers: With Emphasis on Øistein Sommerfeldt and Publications by Norsk Musikforlag, seeks to broaden awareness of the available flute repertoire. Dr. Haug is featured on the Naxos recordings Network and Rest, and in the 2008 Emmy Award-winning production, Christmas at Luther. She has toured with ensembles throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Flute Fest is an annual UMFA event dedicated to our love of the flute. Each year we feature an inspiring guest artist, and host the final rounds of the Young Artist Competition and Laudie Porter Memorial Scholarship Competition for junior high and high school students. There are also masterclasses, discussions and workshops, as well as opportunities for participation, so bring your flute! It is a fabulous day to shop for flutes and flute music from our many knowledgeable exhibitors. Those who prefer to spend the day listening, will delight in the concerts and recitals, including our Rising Stars Recitals, dedicated to our youngest students. Join our flute community! We welcome all ages and ability levels to join us!
