The flute has been a part of the Irish traditional music scene for centuries, but the way the instrument is played and the style it is expected to play in can be a big mystery to the classically trained flutist. During this workshop we will talk about the Irish traditional approach to the flute and how to sound authentic, learn specifics about the style and how to do some of the typical ornaments, and have a lot of fun playing tunes! This workshop is participatory, so have your flute (regular or Irish style) and/or whistle (in D) and get ready to have fun!

Andra Bohnet is a flutist who embraces a rich variety of musical styles with both virtuosity and sensitivity. In addition to her position as Professor of Music at the University of South Alabama where she teaches flute, music history/literature, technology and chamber music She is the principal flutist with Mobile Symphony Orchestra where she has been a featured soloist on several occasions. She also performs regularly with the Trebuchet Wind Trio (, the Liminal Duo (, a flute and percussion duo, which crosses the threshold between ancient, Celtic, and modern musical idioms with a bit of technology added into the mix, and new her newest band, 2nd Breakfast (, a high energy modern Celtic ensemble. She previously performed and recorded with the legacy ensembles Mithril ( and the Silverwood Quartet, a chamber ensemble for flute and strings.

Andra performs and records on flutes of all shapes and sizes (classical, traditional simple system, baroque and a variety of ethnic instruments), as well as Celtic harp.
