Laudie Porter Memorial Competition provides an opportunity for students in grades 7 through 12 to compete in a solo competition and receive scholarships.  Current UMFA members (may join with competition application) in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to compete.  A competitor may only place first once per grade division and may compete only in his/her grade division. The contest fee is $15 plus current UMFA membership. 

Prizes:

7th & 8th Grade division: $100 (winner), $75 (runner-up)

9th & 10th Grade division: $125 (winner), $100 (runner-up)

11th & 12th Grade division: $150 (winner), $125 (runner-up)


Eligibility:

  1. Current UMFA members in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to compete. (If you are not currently an active member, please visit UMFA Membership Page.) 
  2. A competitor may only place first once per grade division and may compete only in his/her grade division. 


Repertoire Requirement:

* Contestants are encouraged to perform repertoire by BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) composers. *

7th & 8th Grade Division

Perform 1 or 2 pieces of your choice. The total performing time needs to be more than 4 minutes but less than 8 minutes.

9th & 10th Grade Division

Perform 2 pieces of your choice. The pieces must be contrasting in style, from differing musical time periods, or be composed by different composers. The total performing time needs to be more than 6 minutes but less than 10 minutes.  

11th & 12th Grade Division

Perform 2 pieces of your choice. The pieces must be contrasting in style, from differing musical time periods, or be composed by different composers. The total performing time needs to be more than 8 minutes but less than 12 minutes. 


To all Contestants:

  1. Pieces written with accompaniment do not have to be recorded with an accompanist this year, but it is encouraged.
  2. Memorization of the repertoire is not required but encouraged.
  3. The results will be announced at the 2021 Virtual Flute Fest, February 21st, 2021, and comment sheets will be sent by email after the Flute Fest. 


How to apply:

  1. Be a UMFA member.  -> Visit UMFA Membership Page
  2. Complete the registration form by clicking "Registration" Button at the left side.
  3. Upload an unedited Video recording via Dropbox. Recordings will be coded and sent to a panel of judges.


Competition Rules:

Contestants, parents and teachers must agree to these rules:

  1. Your video submission will belong to UMFA and understand that the winners’ videos might be shown as part of the virtual Flute Fest in February 2021.
  2. Must agree to the judge’s decision – judges are not required to award a winner if flutists do not meet UMFA standards
  3. Must perform the repertoire on the application.
  4. Parents, teachers and competitors must sign the application to say they agree to these rules.
  5. Applications and fees must be submitted by Sunday, January 17th, 2021      


The following will result in disqualification: Contest fees will not be returned to disqualified competitors.

  1. If application and fees are not submitted by Sunday, January 17th, 2021.
  2. If contestant performs different repertoire than on the application.
  3. If the application is incomplete.



APPLICATION AND RECORDINGS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 11:59 PM ON JANUARY 17th, 2021.
